Coating that Makes Scratches on Devices Heal Themselves

Scientists from the University of Southern Mississippi managed to develop technology that makes the scratches on different devices "heal" themselves. The technology also proved to be effective against scratches on cars and furniture.

To be able to protect your device from scratches, it would require coating with a special polyurethane treatment. The transparent coating has a number of unique properties some of them being borrowed from chitosan, which is a material that makes the exoskeletons of crustaceans and insects hard.

Chitosan is mixed with oxetane, an organic compound with a four-membered ring, having three atoms of carbon and one of oxygen (molecular formula C3H6O). The Oxetane is rather unstable, which is important for the healing of scratches.

If you scratch the coating, you break the oxetane ring. Sun's ultraviolet rays serve as a mechanism that turns on the chitosan, which in its turn binds the molecule pieces together and closes the ring, which "heals" the scratch. In natural sunlight the whole process might take around 30 minutes, informs PhysOrg.com.

It is worth mentioning that previous the attempts to create a coating that heals its own scratches showed little effect. The latest technology, however, shows promising results. The coating is still in the development stage and there's no information when it will be ready for commercial use. Besides, it is yet unknown what happens when two scratches appear on the coating and when they intersect.

RADIATION FORM CELL PHONES

Radiation from Cell Phones Could Fight Alzheimer's, at Least in Mice

According to a new study carried out by a group of researchers from University of South Florida, the radiation from cell phones can reverse Alzheimer's-like symptoms. It is worth mentioning that the team, led by Juan Sanchez-Ramos, made its research on genetically tweaked mice.

Currently it is unknown how exactly does the radiation protect against Alzheimer's. Scientists offer several explanations. They suggest that microwaves produce cellular stress in the brain. This stress engages DNA repair mechanisms inside the brain.

At the same time Juan Sanchez-Ramos, the co-author of the research, warned that the study did not represent "a perfect replication of cell phone use in humans." In addition, the scientist mentioned that the results of the study do not mean that the radiation from cell phones would have the same effect on humans. This is due to the fact that Alzheimer's disease develops differently in humans, said George Perry, an Alzheimer's specialist from the University of Texas, San Antonio, who did not take part in the study.

More information regarding the experiment can be found here.

Perry also mentioned that the results of the current study could also mean that radiation from cell phones might be harmful for health. At the moment, however, scientists are still debating about the influence of radiation from cell phones on human brain, with some considering that cell phone use could lead to the development of brain cancer.

Latest Invention: Carbon-Fiber Based Material that Can Replace Batteries

Researchers from the Imperial College, London, are currently working on a project that can completely replace batteries.

The $4.5 million project involves the development of a lightweight material that will be able to store electricity. Researchers have already patented their carbon fiber based polymer resin. The material is light enough to be used to form the casing of different portable devices.

Due to the fact that the new material does not require chemical reaction to generate electricity, it will not degrade over time. The team of researchers says that if their latest invention is used in cars, it can reduce their weight by 15 percent. In addition, the material will also increase the charging process of electric vehicles, informs CleanTechnica.

Weight reduction is also an advantage for cell phones. However, currently the researchers did not present any information on the substance their latest invention is made of.

Latest Invention: Latex Membranes that Makes Your Home Soundproof

Now it is possible to soundproof your home from the noisy neighbors next-door by using the latest invention developed by a team of researchers led by Zhiyu Yang at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Kowloon.

The researchers came up with noise-canceling panels that are made of latex rubber membrane which extends over a 3mm-thick rigid plastic grid composed of 1cm-wide squares. Each square has a tiny, weighted plastic button in the center. The system is quite inexpensive and very effective. Most walls cannot offer effective soundproof quality against low-frequencies sound waves, because the latter have a length of more than 3 meters in the air and even longer in solids, said Zhiyu Yang.

In order to be able to block all sound, a structure would require walls that are several meters think. Yang explains how their latest invention works: "The inner part of the membrane vibrates in opposite phase to the outer region." This means that sound waves negate each other and no sound passes through the membrane.

There's one little drawback: one latex membrane can protect against sound waves within a small band of frequencies. To solve the problem researchers decided to use five membranes at once. They stacked five latex membranes together and tuned each membrane to a particular band. By doing so they managed to block sound waves at frequencies between 70 and 550 hertz, informs New Scientist.

According to the team, their latest invention can be used in various noisy environments like airports.

NASA to Build Roomy Balloon-Like Space Habitats

It is possible that in the near future astronauts will orbit planet Earth in spacious space balloons that will replace less roomy habitats used today.

It is worth mentioning that on February 1st, 2010, the White House decided that NASA should shift from its plans to work on moon missions to research and development.

On February 22nd, the space agency published on its website a detailed budget proposal that unveils NASA's plans. One of the sections mentioned that the new, balloon-like habitats can be less costly, more lightweight and larger compared to the traditional habitats made of metal.

According to NASA, new habitats can be used as space stations or even serve as moon bases. In order to analyze their ability to protect against space radiation, the agency looks forward to send the structures to the International Space Station.
